Chris Messina and Distributed Social Networks with Drupal

chris messinaWe are very excited to announce that Chris Messina from Vidoop will be joining us at Do It With Drupal. Chris is a co-founder of the DiSo project, focusing on distributed social networks.

Known online as "factoryjoe", Chris has been at the heart of some of the most interesting developments in social networks, open standards and community organization. From his leadership role in the BarCamp and Coworking movements to his central involvement in technologies like oAuth and Microformats, Chris is without a doubt an internet rockstar.

Chris has a long history with Drupal. He did the theming work on the original Spread Firefox site and was an early member of the CivicSpace Labs team. While his work is not exclusively Drupal focused these days, "community plumbing" is still very important to the DiSo project and Chris' work. Come find out more about the exciting work happening and how it relates to your Drupal site.

jQuery Adopted By Microsoft and Nokia

jQueryOne of the great things about Drupal adopting an outside JavaScript library is that while we focus on PHP and back-end needs, we get to benefit from the great work of a community focused specifically on JavaScript and front-end development. And jQuery is being used by many projects and websites including Digg, Netflix, Technorati, WordPress, and even Google.

Last week, jQuery creator, John Resig, announced that both Microsoft and Nokia will be adding themselves to this list. Read more »

Making Whuffie with Tara Hunt

Tara HuntDrupal may be "Community Plumbing" - but what does it mean to build these communities and how can we learn to make the most of it? Enter social capital - or "Whuffie" as coined by Cory Doctorow.

We are thrilled to have Tara Hunt, who wrote the book on whuffie, presenting at Do it With Drupal. Tara spends her days with her company, Citizen Agency, dedicated to helping other companies work with their communities. Drupal can provide you with the tools, come learn how to make the most of them to boost your whuffie.

As an aside Cory Doctorow is interviewed in the current issue of Linux Journal (our media sponsor) - check the issue for our ad for Do it With Drupal!

Come learn from Gábor Hojtsy

Gábor Hojtsy2008 has been a big year for Gábor Hojtsy: he started working full-time on Drupal (with our presenting sponsor Acquia), he got married and was one of the principal organizers for DrupalCon Szeged. However, Gábor began the year with the release of Drupal 6.0.

One of the major goals for Drupal 6 was to improve Drupal's multilingual support: i.e. make it easier to support multiple languages and non-English languages in Drupal. Since that release, Gábor has spent the year as the branch maintainer for Drupal 6 - reviewing patches, making releases and ensuring the overall quality of Drupal's latest release.

Is there a multilingual site in your future? Come learn from Gábor how to Do It With Drupal!

Benefitting the Drupal Association

The Drupal Association We'd like to remind people that $50 from each registration paid for The Do It With Drupal Seminar will be donated directly to The Drupal Association.

The Drupal Association is Drupal's non-profit entity and is tasked with paving the roads and running the power and water lines that make Drupal happen. Donations to the Association are used to purchase the hardware which runs drupal.org, to finance the current redesign of drupal.org, and to organize biannual DrupalCon events. For Drupal to continue to grow and flourish both as a platform and as a community, we need a strong governing body of decision makers with the finances to get things done.

Of course, we always encourage anyone involved with Drupal to donate to the Association whenever they can. But for those with several layers of management above them, we realize that it's often difficult to make a case for a donation like this. By sharing the profits from Do It With Drupal, the success of this event can also be a success for the Drupal Association.
