Karen McGrane

Karen has been making the internet a better place since 1995. As a Senior Partner at Bond, she leads a team of interaction designers, information architects, and content strategists, and she designs applications and services for clients. Karen led the design of Signal Patterns, developing a usable survey-taking interface and a completely interactive way to view results. For craft publisher CK Media, Karen architected a solution that supports their vast array of content and allows their readership to contribute and connect. For Fast Company, she revitalized their online presence, building a robust resource for business professionals to connect with each other and share ideas.
Prior to joining Bond, Karen went from being the first information architect hired at Razorfish to being the VP and National Lead for User Experience. Over the 10 years she spent there, she led projects for dozens of clients, including media companies like New York Times, Condé Nast, Nielsen Media Research, The New York Public Library, and The Disney Internet Group, and financial services companies like the Federal Reserve Bank, Bank One, J.P. Morgan, and Citibank.
Karen is an active participant in the User Experience community and a frequent speaker at conferences, including SIGCHI, the ASIST Information Architecture Summit, and IIID. She has also contributed to several Forrester reports on developing personas, and is a former editor of the AIGA publication Gain, focused on the intersection of design and business.
Karen received an M.S. in Technical Communication from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, focusing her research and studies on interface design and usability. She taught courses in Human Computer Interaction via distance learning to IBM campuses across North America, and acted as the Assistant Director of Writing Programs in the Department of Language, Literature, and Communication. Karen holds B.A. degrees in Philosophy and American Studies from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.
